Elissa Lippen/Matthew Helm Memorial Scholarship Fund

Date Established: June 4, 2014

Originally established in 1995, this scholarship fund was created as a lasting legacy to honor and celebrate the lives of Elissa Lippen and Matthew Helm, two close friends who tragically lost their lives together in a fire in 1995. Childhood sweethearts, Elissa and Matthew graduated from Fallsburg Central High School in June 1991 and went on to pursue their passions in New York City.

Elissa graduated from Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts, and later LIM College in Manhattan. She was employed by Henri Bendel, where she worked in an upscale women’s specialty store and dreamed of one day owning her own boutique. Matthew, a native of Woodridge, attended Pace University and worked as a counselor at Cumberland House. He was also an accomplished guitarist who performed in clubs throughout the city.

Elissa and Matthew’s lives were tragically cut short on March 18, 1995, when a fire ravaged Elissa’s Upper West Side apartment. This fund was established in their memory to honor their lives, their aspirations, and the lasting impact they continue to have on the Fallsburg community.
