Hoops for Hayes Fund

Date Established: June 4, 2014

This fund will provide grants towards the purchase of equipment and charitable projects and also to provide scholarships annually to students. Eligible students are Washingtonville Central School District Seniors who have participated in at least one sport during their high school career and who have maintained a minimum GPA of 80%.The fund was established in memory of Joseph Charles Hayes who embodied the idea of living life to the fullest. With his sudden passing, his friends and classmates would like to carry on his memory by raising funds to support refurbishment of basketball courts at Mays Field, in the heart of Washingtonville, where Joseph created his most unforgettable memories. Hoops for Hayes will also award scholarships to athletes of Washingtonville High School.


Hoops for Hayes Memorial Scholarship

The Hoops for Hayes Memorial Scholarship awards one (1) scholarship in the amount of $500 to a graduating senior from Washingtonville High School. Established in memory of Joseph Charles Hayes, a member of the Washingtonville High School Class of 2006, this scholarship honors Joe’s vibrant spirit, love of basketball, and lasting impact on his community.

Created following Joseph’s tragic passing in 2012, Hoops for Hayes began as an annual fundraising event celebrating his life and passion for the game. The scholarship reflects the fund’s broader mission to support student-athletes, strengthen community basketball opportunities, and honor a beloved friend, family member, and teammate.

Eligibility & Application Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be a graduating senior from Washingtonville High School
  • Be registered to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university
  • Have participated in freshman, JV, or varsity sports during high school
  • Have a minimum GPA of 82
  • Submit a written response of 500–750 words discussing how participation in sports or athletics helped them overcome a personal hardship and outlining their goals after graduating from college
  • Submit one letter of recommendation from a teacher, employer, coach, counselor, or other appropriate reference

Students must create a profile in the CFOSR Scholarship Portal to view and apply for scholarship opportunities connected to this fund. Once logged in, applicants will be able to access the application and submit all required materials.
