The Iris Mitzner Science Teacher Scholarship Fund was established to support individuals who are committed to becoming middle- or high-school science teachers and who seek to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of learning in future generations. The fund supports aspiring science teachers from Orange, Sullivan, and Rockland counties, including recent high school graduates, community college students, and adults returning to school to pursue a career in science education. Iris Mitzner Science Teacher Scholarship
The Iris Mitzner Science Teacher Scholarship supports individuals pursuing a career as a middle- or high-school science teacher. This opportunity is open to applicants from public schools in Orange, Sullivan, and Rockland counties who demonstrate creativity, motivation, and a desire to make a meaningful impact through science education.
The scholarship recognizes future educators at various stages of their academic journey, including graduating high school seniors, community college students, and adults returning to school to enter the teaching profession.
Eligibility & Application Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a graduate of a public school in Orange, Sullivan, or Rockland counties, or currently enrolled in an educational program within the region
- Plan to pursue a career as a middle- or high-school science teacher
- Be a graduating high school senior, a community college student (including second-year students), or an adult returning to school
- Submit academic transcripts
- Submit letters of recommendation from teachers or other appropriate references
- Submit a written response addressing the following:
- Describe your decision to pursue a career as a science teacher and what this path means to you
- Create and submit a sample science lesson plan demonstrating your approach to teaching (video submissions may be included, if applicable)
Additional screening, including interviews, may be considered as part of the review process.
Students must create a profile in the CFOSR Scholarship Portal to view and apply for scholarship opportunities connected to this fund. Once logged in, applicants will be able to access the application and submit all required materials.
